Ace Gillett’s Musical Happenings – Week of 10.31.18

Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for your listening pleasure this week:

Riley Williams

The Riley Williams Trio

Wednesday, 10/31 – 7:30 to 11:00

Happy Halloween! We saw some great costumes on Saturday and I expect there will be a lot of folks dressed up tonight. To help celebrate All Hallows’ Eve, we have a special appearance by the Riley Williams Trio featuring Riley on drums, Nick Isherwood on bass and Adam Astrup on guitar. I know they have a costume theme planned for tonight, but you’ll have to come down and check it out for yourself!

Riley Williams

Shawn Williams

Thursday, 11/1 – 8:00 to Midnight

The Subterraneans are happy to welcome back Shawn Williams on trumpet. Shawn is a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado and is originally from Santa Clara, CA. Shawn and Ace house-bassist Seth Lewis both toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra at the same time and were roommates on the road.

Holiday Lighting Andrew Vogt John Olson

Andrew Vogt

Friday, 11/2 – 8:00 to Midnight

The Subterraneans welcome back Ace Gillett’s crowd favorite Andrew Vogt, on more saxophones than you’ll ever see congregated on one bandstand! Don’t forget to check out Andrew (and myself) performing for the Holiday Lighting Ceremony at Oak Street Plaza, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. After that, we’re moving the party one block South for a fantastic Friday night in the subterranean confines of Ace Gillett’s! Time to get Lit! (Holiday speaking…)

Ace Gillett's Lounge, The Armstrong Hotel, Fort Collins, Colorado

The Ben Markley Trio

Saturday, 11/3 – 8:00 to Midnight

It’s the return of the Ben Markley Trio, featuring Seth Lewis on bass and myself on drums. Ben is busier than ever this Fall with a variety of projects and performances, including a recent clinic with the University of Wyoming Faculty Combo for the jazz band students at Poudre High School. Ben will also be performing a Piano-Duo concert with Eric Gunnison at the University of Wyoming Concert Hall this Thursday night. Be sure to pick up a copy of Ben’s latest Quartet CD, “Basic Economy,” featuring Greg Osby, Evan Gregor and Dru Heller. A featured track, “Road to Ace,” pays tribute to his long-time residency at Ace Gillett’s (and the 60-plus miles he drives each way to get there).

Mark Sloniker

Mark Sloniker

Sunday, 11/4 – 7:00 to 11:00

Fort Collins’ longtime favorite pianist Mark Sloniker joins us for his regular Sunday slot. For those of you that have been around Fort Collins for a long time, you might remember Mark’s Residency at the Wine Cellar, a now defunct restaurant just south of the Foothills Mall that was “the” place to hear local live jazz in the early 90’s. Mark played there so many nights, that the sustain pedal from his piano wore a permanent mark in the parquet wood floor of the lounge area. We used to joke that he needed to hang that piece of wood up in his studio someday as a reminder of all the fantastic music that he was a part of for all those years. I’m not sure if we just talked about it or if it actually happened….you’ll have to ask Mark to tell you the story the next time you see him at Ace!

JAM SESSION THIS MONDAY!!!

The next Ace Gillett’s Jazz Jam Session will be on Monday, 11/5, from 7:00 to 11:00 pm, due to a house-band scheduling conflict on 11/12. Please come join in on the fun – if you’re planning on playing, please dress accordingly and show up early to get your name on the sign-up sheet.

As always, thank you for supporting live jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you there soon!
