This Week At Ace’s – October 24-28, 2018 – The Music, The Artists & More
Ace Gillett’s Musical Happenings – Week of 10.24.18
Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for your listening pleasure this week. As always, Ace’s showcases some amazing jazz talent each week, offering a unique and unforgettable live music in Fort Collins experience.
Spencer Zweifel and Katie Harris
Wednesday, 10/24 – 7:30pm to 11:00pm
Tonight’s duo features Spencer Zweifel on piano with Katie Harris on vocals. It’s going to be a busy week for Spencer as he’ll be at Ace Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night. To my knowledge, this is the first time Spencer and Katie have performed together as a duo at Ace Gillett’s. It’s sure to be a great night of jazz standards and pop tunes with a jazzy twist.
Thursday, 10/25 – 8:00pm to Midnight
The Subterraneans are happy to welcome back alto saxophonist Briana Harris. Bri is a founding member of Greeley-based “Sweaty Soul” group the Burroughs, who just got back in town after a Fall Tour that featured shows in CO, MO, OH, AL, LA and TX. It’s always a great night of music when Bri joins us and we can’t wait to hear about her latest adventures on the road!
Friday, 10/26 – 8:00pm to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome back guitar-slinger extraordinaire Steve Kovalcheck. Steve is a familiar face with Ace Gillett’s regulars, and his top-notched musicianship always brings the music up to the highest level. If you really want to see Steve’s face light up, ask him about his all-time favorite musician, Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham (a drummer!?!).
Ben Markley Trio
Saturday, 10/27 – 8:00pm to Midnight
It’s the return of the Ben Markley Trio, featuring Seth Lewis on bass and myself on drums. Ben is busier than ever this Fall with a variety of projects and performances, including a recent clinic with the University of Wyoming Faculty Combo for the jazz band students at Poudre High School. Be sure to pick up a copy of Ben’s latest Quartet CD, “Basic Economy,” featuring Greg Osby, Evan Gregor and Dru Heller. A featured track, “Road to Ace,” pays tribute to his long-time residency at Ace Gillett’s (and the 60-plus miles he drives each way to get there).
Sunday, 10/8 – 7:00pm to 11:00pm
Fort Collins’ longtime favorite pianist Mark Sloniker joins us for his regular Sunday slot. Hopefully you had a chance to hear Mark (and family) last week, as Myles Sloniker joined in on the musical fun during his short visit to CO from New York City, where he’s currently based. The picture above of Mark and Myles is from the cover of Mark’s 1995 release “Do Watcha Love,” which is what Mark continues to do every week performing jazz in Fort Collins.
The next Ace Gillett’s Jazz Jam Session will be on Monday, 11/5, from 7:00 to 11:00 pm, due to a house-band scheduling conflict on 11/12. Please come join in on the fun – if you’re planning on playing, please dress accordingly and show up early to get your name on the sign-up sheet.
As always, thank you for supporting live jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you here soon!
