Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for this week:
Gabriel Mervine
Thursday, 3/14– 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome Gabriel Mervine on trumpet and flugelhorn, accompanied by Tom Amend, Seth Lewis and myself. Since leaving his spot with the heavily-touring Motet after 9 years, Gabriel has become a fixture on the Denver jazz scene. He hosts the weekly session at Spangalang Brewing, where he is often joined by Tom Amend. We’ll make up for being closed last night due to the inclement weather with a smoking-hot session of quartet jazz tonight!
Jim Pisano
Friday, 3/15 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome tenor saxophonist Jim Pisano to town for what has become an annual performance at Ace Gillett’s when he comes to CO to visit family and friends. Jim is the Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Ensembles at the Wichita State University School of Music. It’s always a fun night of jazz when Jim’s in town – on Friday he’ll be accompanied by Spencer Zweifel, Seth Lewis and myself.
Tom Amend Trio
Saturday, 3/16– 8:00 to Midnight
We’ll be featuring the Tom Amend Trio, with Seth Lewis and myself. Mark your calendars now for Monday, April 29th when we’ll be featuring a CD Release concert for Tom’s new offering “Frontier Justice.” Tom’s debut Organ Trio release features Steve Kovalcheck on guitar and legendary jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton. All three musicians will be on hand for the release show, with reserved tickets for concert-style seating in Mantz Hall going on sale on April 1st. More details will be coming soon on the Ace Gillett’s website.
Jazz Jam Session
Sunday, 3/17 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm
This Sunday we’ll be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with our monthly Jazz Jam Session, for a V.S.O.P. (very special on-time performance) on a Sunday night! Green ties are encouraged along with any Irish Jazz Jigs you might want to play. Your hosts for the evening will be Jack Roben, Seth Lewis and myself – I hope to see you there!
