Greetings and Happy New Year, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for this week:
Wednesday, 01/09 – 7:30 to 11:00
Tonight we feature the lovely and talented Jenna McLean on vocals, accompanied by Jack Roben on Guitar. These two young performers are working together a lot these days, and their musical chemistry gets better with each performance.
Thursday, 01/10 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome Gabriel Mervine on trumpet and flugelhorn, accompanied by Tom Amend on piano, Patrick McDevitt on bass and myself on drums. Gabriel is a mainstay on the Denver Jazz Scene, and toured the country for many years as a member of the Motet. Thursday nights with this group are somewhat of a “well-kept secret,” and if you have an opportunity to come out, you’ll see why we try to have Gabriel as often as his busy schedule allows. This week we’ll be exploring the funkier side of jazz, playing a selection of Gabriel, Patrick and Tom’s original tunes.
Friday, 01/11– 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome Briana Harris on alto saxophone, accompanied by Ben Parrish on guitar, Matt Smiley on bass and myself on drums. Bri, Ben and Matt perform together as a quartet named Dart Echo, so this will be a similar iteration of that group with myself occupying the drum chair instead of their regular drummer Ryan Seward. I expect to play some tunes I don’t know, which is always a good thing!
Saturday, 01/12 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome Jeff Jenkins on piano, accompanied Bill McCrossen on bass and myself on drums. Jeff always brings different music to these Trio settings, so it’s always a different musical program when he’s the soloist. I don’t get to play with Bill too often, but it’s always a treat when he’s here to sub for a night.
Sunday, 01/13 – 7:00 to 11:00
Local Legend Mark Sloniker is back for more Sunday night fun in the Lounge. Mark’s first set is typically solo piano with an eclectic mix of jazz standards and originals. Later in the evening, he is often joined by his wife Colleen and daughter Emma for some family vocals. Come see why Sundays are a weekly favorite with the Ace Gillett’s Crowd!
Monday, 1/14/19 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm
Our Ace Gillett’s Jazz Jam Session is back for it’s regular, Second-Monday-of-the-Month timeslot. As always, we ask that all interested performers follow the Ace Musician’s dress code – suit and tie for men and cocktail attire for women. These jam sessions are quickly becoming a great networking event for fellow musicians in addition to having a chance to perform. Rumor has it that I’ll be bringing out another “Special” set of cymbals, to give the drummers something to talk about!
As always, Thank You for supporting live jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you there soon!
