This Week at Ace’s – December 5-9, 2018 – The Music, The Artists & More
Ace Gillett’s Musical Happenings – Week of 12.05.18
Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for your listening pleasure this week:
Ryan Fourt and David Baker
Wednesday, 12/05 – 8:00 to 11:00
Ace Gillett’s is closed this evening for a private event until 8:00 pm, when Ryan Fourt and David Baker (last-minute sub for Katie Harris) take the stage for your listening pleasure. Ryan has been part of the Ace musical family from the beginning, and we’re happy to feature him on a regular basis, even as he has taken over the Musical Director Role with our friends and neighbors, Jay’s Bistro. Bassist David Baker is in the jazz program at UNC and performs with Ryan often. I haven’t had the opportunity to hear the two of them in a duo setting, but I would expect to hear a mix of classic jazz standards with some of Ryan’s original music as well.
Andrew Vogt
Thursday, 12/06 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome back local favorite Andrew Vogt on multiple saxophones, accompanied by Seth Lewis on bass, Daniel Thompson on piano and myself on drums. It’s always an entertaining evening when Andrew is on board – you can expect to hear some West Coast Jazz favorites and maybe a Holiday tune or two.
Steve Kovalcheck
Friday, 12/07– 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome back Ace favorite Steve Kovalcheck on guitar, with Jeff Jenkins on piano, Seth Lewis on bass and Andy Wheelock on drums. Andy is the new Percussion Professor at the University of Wyoming and this will be his first time playing at Ace Gillett’s. This is a stellar lineup for a Friday night that is guaranteed to not disappoint – don’t miss it!
The Ben Markley Trio
Saturday, 12/08 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Ben Markley Trio with Seth Lewis on bass and myself on drums is back for its’ usual Saturday night stint, with plenty of classic standards and some Holiday tunes as well. This Trio plays together a lot and it shows. People have asked me on several occasions how often we get together to rehearse, and are typically surprised to hear that the answer is “never.” But we do enjoy playing together, and often navigate tunes in the same direction without giving it a second thought, as it’s truly second nature at this point.
Mark Sloniker
Sunday, 12/09– 7:00 to 11:00
Fort Collins’ longtime favorite pianist Mark Sloniker joins us for his regular Sunday slot. Mark plays an eclectic collection of jazz standards, pop tunes and original compositions. He’s frequently joined by his wife Colleen and daughter Emma and vocals, as well as a variety of musical friends that sit in throughout the evening. Come see why Sunday nights are a long-running favorite at Ace Gillett’s!
Mark your calendars for 12/10/18, as we continue our Jazz Jam Session on it’s traditional second Monday of the month, from 7:00 to 11:00 pm. As always, out of respect to the golden era of jazz we ask that all performers follow the Ace Gillett’s musicians dress code – suit and tie for men, cocktail attire for women. Drummers: please note that for this session, my cymbal set-up will be made up entirely of vintage Paiste Formula 602’s – don’t miss this opportunity to hear how you sound playing on these rare instruments!
The ticket link is up for our 12/20 concert featuring the Dave King Trio with Matt Mitchell and Billy Peterson – grab your tickets today!
As always, Thank You for supporting live jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you there soon!
