Ace Gillett’s Musical Happenings – Week of 8.21.19
Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for this week:
Wednesday, 8/21 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm
Tonight we’re having our weekly Jazz Jam Session, hosted this week by Spencer Zweifel, Seth Lewis and myself. This will be Spencer’s last night performing with us before he heads to William Paterson University to pursue his Master’s Degree. Spencer has been an integral part of the Live Jazz you’ve heard at Ace Gillett’s for the last several years, performing with duos, trios, quartets and solo piano. We wish him great success on his next adventure and will definitely be featuring him again when he’s home on Holiday breaks. Come on down to give Spencer a proper send-off!
Drums, Piano, Bass, and a Vocal mic are all provided. As always, we ask that interested performers follow our musician’s dress code of suit and tie for men and cocktail attire for women. All playing levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Weekly food and drink specials are featured as well!
Thursday, 8/22 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm
The Subterraneans welcome back long-time Ace Gillett’s favorite Gabriel Mervine on trumpet and flugelhorn. Gabriel will be joined by the venerable Eric Gunnison on piano, Seth Lewis on bass and myself on drums. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Gabriel and Eric (two of Denver’s finest!) together this Thursday.
Friday, 8/23 – 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome back local sax-man Andrew Vogt! Andrew has just released a new CD, “Distracted by Donuts” and will have copies available for sale at the show. Andrew will be joined by Tom Amend, Seth Lewis and myself.
Saturday, 8/24– 8:00 to Midnight
The Subterraneans welcome the return of the Ben Markley Trio, with Seth Lewis and John Olson. Ben has just released a new small-group CD “Slow Play,” featuring Joel Frahm, Marty Kenney, Jim White and Andy Wheelock. I heard it for the first time last week and it’s outstanding, featuring all original compositions by Ben.
Sunday, 8/25 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm
Mark Sloniker is back playing solo piano in the Lounge for his regular Sunday Night slot. Mark is a weekly favorite at Ace Gillett’s and is usually joined by family and friends for his second and third sets. Mark has earned his status as a local legend, having undoubtably played more nights of live music in Fort Collins than anyone else on record!
As you may have already heard, renovations for Ace Gillett’s are on hold for the time being. Spread the word that we’ll continue featuring your favorite food, cocktails and Live Jazz Wednesday through Sunday nights until further notice. If you haven’t had a chance to see the renovations at the Armstrong, come on down and admire the transformation!
As always, Thank You for supporting Live Jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you there soon!
