This Week at Ace’s – April 3 – 7, 2019 – The Music, The Artists & More

Ace Gillett’s – Musical Happenings – 04.03.19

Greetings, Jazz Fans! Ace Gillett’s Music Director John Olson here to let you know what we have cued up for this week:

Jazz Jam Session

Wednesday, 4/3– 7:00 to 11:00 pm

Our Monthly Jazz Jam Session moves to a weekly schedule starting tonight! For six out of the next seven weeks, you can come down and sit in with the Subterranean Jazz Trio. Tonight’s Jam will be hosted by Spencer Zweifel, Seth Lewis and myself.

Briana Harris & Annie Booth

Thursday, 4/4 – 8:00 to Midnight

the Subterraneans welcome saxophonist Briana Harris and pianist Annie Booth, accompanied by Seth Lewis and myself. Briana is a founding member of Greeley’s “Sweaty Soul” sensation the Burroughs and a regular performer on the Front Range Jazz scene. Annie used to play with us weekly at Ace Gillett’s and is firmly established as one of the top jazz stars in Denver. Her group “The Annie Booth Trio,” consistently wins Westword Magazine’s Best Jazz Artist award. It’s not too often that we have Bri and Annie together and this is going to be a great night of music!

Kenyon Brenner & Steve Kovalcheck

Friday, 4/5 – 8:00 to Midnight

the Subterraneans welcome Kenyon Brenner on Tenor sax, accompanied by Steve Kovalcheck, Seth Lewis and myself. Kenyon, Steve and Seth are all part of the teaching faculty at UNC and frequent performers at Ace’s.

Ben Markley Trio

Saturday, 4/6 – 8:00 to Midnight

Pianist Ben Markley is back in a Trio setting, accompanied by Seth Lewis and myself. In addition to being the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wyoming, Ben is an in-demand performer for the local and regional jazz scene, leading and performing with a variety of different groups. In May, Ben will have a Friday residency at Nocturne in Denver. It’s always a good night for music when we feature the Ben Markley Trio!

Mark Sloniker

Sunday, 4/7 – 7:00 to 11:00 pm

Tonight we welcome back Mark Sloniker to his usual Sunday night slot after a well-deserved break. Sundays usually start with Mark on solo piano, with friends, family and other musical guests joining him throughout the evening.

Save the Date(s)! – we have a couple of special shows coming up that you should put on your calendar. On Wednesday, 4/17, we’ll be featuring Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini in a duo setting. Natalie is an outstanding trombonist and vocalist and a member of Trey Anastasio’s (Phish) touring band. You might remember her from her performance at Ace Gillett’s with Peter John Stoltzman, Allison Miller and Gonzalo Teppa from February of 2018.  There’s no cover charge for this special concert that starts at 7:30 pm.

On Monday, 4/29, Tom Amend will be performing a CD Release Concert for his new Organ Trio Album “Frontier Justice.” Tom recorded the album late last Fall with guitarist Steve Kovalcheck and legendary jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton, who will both be joining him at this special show. Reserved and General Admission tickets will be available online later this week.

As always, Thank You for supporting live jazz at Ace Gillett’s – I hope to see you there soon!
